I would like to take a moment to clarify some of the misconceptions expressed above:

A charter school is a public school, therefore there is no real basis for considering its funding as “subsidized”. Charter schools actually get less funding than district schools, and must fund raise prodigiously in order to make up the difference.

CWC was placed at Stoner by LAUSD because of the amount of empty space at the school. This placement was entirely out of CWC’s control. And as a parent of a student there, I can say with certainty that none of us have ever had any intention to “destroy the community of the school”. We simply want our kids to be able to receive the kind of quality, public education offered through CWC – a model of pedagogy not available through our own neighborhood public schools.

This leads me to my third point: CWC is available to all students through a lottery system. There is no individualized, hand-picked selection of students. It strives for economic, social and racial diversity, and so far is doing a pretty great job trying to meet that goal.

I hope this clears up any misunderstandings you have.

If they want their own school, let them find their own space. The fact is there is a ton of empty space all over Los Angeles. To move into an existing school and destroy the community of that school is just wrong. Charter schools are greedy and only take certain kids.
