Sonja- That’s absolutely untrue. My child attends KEA (the highest performing school) and he has a disability. They were totally willing to work with us and the IEP process was a breeze we received everything we felt our child needed and more. They earn high scores not from “cherry picking” but through hard work, dedication and parent involvement. Besides students are chosen based on a lottery. My child has blossomed and he loves his school.

When these charters stop discriminating against those students in most need and include them on their campuses with meaningful supports – then these are empty scores. A typical school has diversity that includes those who don’t “test well”. Taking the “easy” students, cherry-picking only those they “want” to teach is the rule with charters unfortunately. A student with Intellectual Disabilities would never be allowed to enroll in KIPP LA “College Prep”. Stacking the deck to look good doesn’t mean they are….
